Not for the first time that night, I sat scratching my head in bewilderment. ‘Is that it?’ I asked. ‘But what happened to the Doctor and his friends after that… that time reversal?’

Silverman shrugged. ‘I am sorry, Mr Addison, I can tell you no more.’

‘Again the Doctor looked completely different,’ noted the stranger. ‘So that could be who I am.’

‘Well, your appearance doesn’t seem to rule it out,’ I admitted, ‘but let’s not jump to conclusions.’ I leaned across to Silverman and took the lump of yellow rock from his hand. ‘So this is gold, eh? Maybe I will get paid my fee after all.’ I threw it back onto the table. ‘Let’s try something else.’

Silverman perused the remaining items in the pile and picked out one that had caught my eye back in my office: the rolled-up local newspaper with the UFO headline. He was about to work his usual magic on it when suddenly the stranger reached across and snatched it from his grasp.

‘No,’ said the little guy, ‘I don’t think that would prove very productive. I think you should try something different.’ I regarded him curiously, but kept my thoughts to myself. It was Silverman who broke the silence:

‘By all means, sir.’ He picked up a small piece of chalk. ‘Would this meet with your approval?’ The stranger grunted in agreement.

‘The chalk it is, then,’ I said.
